In this unit students will identify the habitats and communities of different plants and animals. They will show the dependency of plants and animals in a specific habitat. Describe the way humans can effect changes on plants and animals within the different habitats. Classify organism according to their role in a food chain (eg. producer, consumer). Note the transfer of energy from the sun to plants and animals. Classify animals as carnivore, omnivore, and herbivore. Describe structural adaptations of plants and animals to their environment. (height of a plant depends on the amount of sunlight, animals in the Arctic have white fur). Use of appropriate vocabulary: habitat, population, ecological niche, community, food chain, species, conservation, extinction, specific environment. Classify insects in the neighborhood according to habitat. Show how extinction of a plant or animal species effects the rest of the natural community. Show how humans are dependent on plants and animals for food, medicine, clothing and lumber. Show the affect of human development on the natural world- how urban development forces certain species to move and can lead to extinction.
