Systems and Interactions include simple machines like pulleys and gears. These have been around for ages and when students study Medieval Times in Social Studies this can be discussed. Pulleys & Gears change the speed and direction and motion of a force. This can be exerted on moving objects. Pulleys and Gears make it possible through force to generate the movement of a larger structure. Gears are specialized wheels and axles and are used daily in many machines. Evaluate the impact of pulleys and gears on society & the environment. Investigate ways in which pulleys and gears modify the speed and direction of a force and the force they exert on a moving object. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles and functions of pulley systems and gear systems. Pulley and Gears in Daily life. Elevators and other lifting devices that use pulleys and gears. Help those with physical challenges. Bicycles use gears and provide transportation and exercise. Snowmobiles/VCR’s & joysticks use pulley and gears. Clothes Dryers/Clothes lines /sewing machines use these devices. Windshield wipers cars & trucks use pulley & gears. Escalators use large amounts of electrical energy. Clothes dryers are fast but they have an impact on the environment because of the use of electricity and natural gas. Gears reduce effort to pedal a bicycle but riding a bicycle requires more effort and takes longer. Bicycles are more environmentally friendly. Does not use fossil fuel. Look at how gears operate in one plane (spur gears) idler gears are two planes (crown bevel). Distinguish between pulley system and gear systems that increase force. Pulley systems: Clothesline Flagpoles Cranes Elevators Farm machinery Gear Systems: bicycles/hand drills/can openers
