Get students to look at Greece and Athens on different maps. Discuss the location of Greece with other places in Europe-Italy (Rome), France, and Spain. Discuss where it is situated in Europe and what Seas surround this country. Explain to students that Greece is a small country in Europe and it is near the Mediterranean Sea. Explain that Greece is a peninsula ( a body of land with water on almost all sides). Also talk about the fact that Greece is made up of islands. Look at a physical map of Greece and let students see that this country has many tall mountains. Explain that these mountains kept the people of Greece apart and therefore many places in Greece had their own city-state with their own laws, rulers and money. Athens and Sparta were both important Greek city-states. Athens believed that the people should rule themselves and run the government. Explain that Athens became the world’s first democracy. Explain the importance of a democratic form of government. Talk about the importance of the Greeks to the establishment of a democratic system of government.
